Concealed Carry on ISU Campus is prohibited

A Reason to be concerned:

America is top in the numbers for per capita gun homicides. Left is a chart showing this.

Popular arguments for and against concealed weapons on campus:

For:

  • Might decrease crime rate
  • Takes away incentives for criminals
  • Might make some students feel safer
  • Rules only apply to law abiding citizens

Against:

  • Might increase crime rate
  • More weapons are on campus
  • Could increase violence using weapons
  • Makes some students feel less safe
  • Easier for criminals to get weapons on campus

Concealed Weapons are prohibited at almost all schools

In December of 2012, a gunman entered a grade school and killed 27 people before killing himself. The Washington Post explained, “The shooter killed 27 people, including his elementary-schoolteacher mother, her principal and 20 children, most of them kindergartners.” Weapons were not allowed on the schools grounds in Newtown, Connecticut.

-The shooter entered the school through the front door and began shooting-

Virginia Tech (2007)

In April of 2007 a shooting took place on the campus

of Virginia Tech that left 33 people dead.

According to the New York Times, “The first (shooting) took place

around 7:15 a.m., when two people were shot and killed at a dormitory.

More than two and a half hours later, 31 others, including the gunman,

were shot and killed across campus in a classroom building.”

The New York Times reported, “The University has more than 25,000

full-time students on a campus that is spread over 2,600 acres.”

According to the New York Times, police were notified but were not able to arrive quickly enough to avoid this massacre. The carry of any weapon on the school campus by civilians was prohibited.

Other Shootings in which Police arrived too late

  • Sandy Hooke Elementary School
  • Aurora, Colorado (The Dark Knight midnight premier)
  • Columbine, Colorado (Columbine High School shooting)

 And almost all others……

Reasons to allow concealed carry of weapons on ISU Campus

  • Safety notifications have not been proven to work
  • Campus security and police arrive to late to help
  • Shootings in the past have proven that laws are not a deterrent
  • Allowance of concealed weapon carry hasn’t been shown to increase violence

Allowance of concealed weapons could mean…..

The difference between this…..

 And this…..

Recommendation based on topic research:

Concealed weapons laws should change to allow ISU students to

carry weapons concealed on campus. The laws should still strictly

regulate who is to be allowed to do this.
